Dear Workshop Participant –
We are delighted that you have agreed to join us for the day to discuss Earthquake Information Dissemination. This group of scientists, emergency managers, policy makers, and local stakeholders has been selected because of the knowledge you bring and the contributions you are making to earthquake research and policy.
The structure of our day together is being set up as a workshop; therefore we are giving each participant the opportunity to share about their particular area of expertise with the larger group. The goal of this is to bring all participants up to speed on the state of the art in research on earthquake hazards and policy and will help to stimulate conversation about earthquake information dissemination. Below this message are three power point slides that will help to guide the development of any comments you would like to make.
The first slide serves as a cover sheet to the workshop. The second slide, “Integrated Warning System Components,” identifies the four components that are key for an effective warning system. The third slide, “Warning Systems and Protective Action,” shows the cycle of emergency communications from the starting point of hazard detection through data collection and analysis, to the ending point of self protective action. We envision that each of you will be able to identify your area of expertise in one or more sections of the emergency communications cycle. We would like you to prepare your comments based upon your relationship to this cycle and share with us the current state of what is known, has been developed, or is in the development stages in terms of research, policy, education, and outreach.
So that we can accommodate discussion comments from each participant, you will be limited to ten minutes each. Any additional visual aids/slides that you would like to use to illustrate your remarks should be sent to Jean Chin at the RESCUE project. Her email address is jlchin@ics.uci.edu.
