Event: ICS High School Scholars Day
Date: March 12, 2005
Target Audience: Prospective Freshmen
With 200 expected attendants, the event presented what UCI and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science (ICS) have to offer to potential students. A key element that complemented the talk from the ICS Dean Debra J. Richardson on the different majors (ICS, CS/E, Informatics, and CS) ICS offers was the demos conducted by several students. Each demo was representative of what a student with a particular major would be able to do after she graduates. In particular, Daniel Massaguer and Vidhya Balasubramanian, from the Rescue group, represented the potential CS majors with a demo on adapting distance learning content to people with disabilities. The demo also illustrated how contextualized information can be sent to users who are impaired in disaster scenarios. The school students returned with an insight into what they can accomplish by entering the CS major!!
Event: Sally Ride Science Festival
Date: November 20, 10:30a.m. - 3:15p.m.
Target Audience: 5th - 8th grade girls
The Rescue group made its presentation on Technologies for Emergency Response for the girls as part of this festival. Dr. Nalini Venkatasubramanian, Associate Professor at the Bren School of Information and Computer Science made a presentation to students about emergency response and how information technology can assist. Dr. Magda El Zarki, Professor at the Bren School of Information and Computer Science gave a short presentation on multimedia technology. Rescue students demonstrated their work to illustrate IT solutions in emergency response management. Vidhya Balasubramanian, Shivajit Mohapatra, Jehan Wickramasurya and Sridevi Parise presented their demonstrations to the eager young minds. The girls were interested in the presentations and about emergency response and had interesting questions that only young minds can think of. It was an interactive session, and both the presenters and school girls went back with something to remember about!
